Meerkat Toy Tracker Saga: The Epilogue

Royal Mail

The final leg of the journey

So, my meerkat has arrived from the continent. I would like to start out by first informing everyone that it is all lies – they come from a factory in Blackburn and are made in China! Frustrations aside, my meerkat toy was handed over to Royal Mail by Postkat and turned up in Manchester two days later. At least they’re faster than Postkat. Can’t fault Postkat though, he did get it to me in the end!

The toy I have been bestowed with was Aleksandr, the great leader of the Meerkat clan in Meerkovo. Luckily for me, the toy that gets the most on eBay ;)

Photos of Aleksandr are below. Annoyingly I checked my post at 11am on Saturday, and found a Royal Mail “While you were out” card. Even more annoyingly the card said that the Postman had called at “10:34am”, a time when I was certainly at home, and certainly awake. I certainly heard no knock on my door, so I can certainly only assume he has gone straight to the post box, shoved the card in and gone on his way. The annoying thing is that in order to get my mail, I have to check my post box. The post box is in a big bank of them (see lovely photo below). Now, the door to my apartment is maybe 15 – 20 steps away from this post box, so why hasn’t the postman knocked instead of just leaving the card?

Postboxes, the first point of call when I get home from work!

Anyway, so I get the card, it says wait 3 hours. I assume that if he hasn’t knocked on my door, hes probably not brought the parcel and just left it at the depot. Nevertheless, 3 hours takes us to 1:34pm, and the office shuts at 2pm. I turn up at 1:50pm. The postman hasn’t arrived back yet. Why hasn’t he arrived back? His card says to leave 3 hours. Its a good 3 minute drive. The petrol alone probably cost more than the value of the Meerkat toy just to get there… Nevermind the return journey!

Alas, I had to wait until Monday after work. I drove on down to the depot and picked up my discreet brown box from the lovely people at the office. Once in the car, I opened the parcel to find out just which Meerkat I had been blessed with. Meet Aleksandr.

Buckle up!

I was sure to buckle him up for the journey back to mine. Note, I did unbuckle him and put him back in the box after taking this photo. I’m not that sad! (Imagine getting stopped by the police on the way home and having to explain that…)

Aleksandr came with a letter thanking me for my ability to know the difference between cheap insurance and meerkats, and a “Certificate of Authenticness”, a COA if you will. He’s the real deal.

So just where did Postkat end up in the epic journey to our shores?

  1. Set off from Meerkovo
  2. Istanbul
  3. Munich
  4. Venice
  5. Krakow
  6. Kiev
  7. Brussels
  8. Pamplona
  9. Gothenburg
  10. Minsk
  11. Split
  12. Monaco
  13. Berlin
  14. Bucharest
  15. Budapest
  16. Rotherdam (So close!)
  17. Calais (Even closer, come on!)
  18. Lisbon
  19. St Petersburg
  20. Prague
  21. Amsterdam
  22. Bologna
  23. Athens
  24. Paris
  25. Rome
  26. Nice
  27. Venice (a second stop, it would seem)
  28. Finally, Dover. Handover to Royal Mail successful!

Not the most efficient of postal services.

Meerkat Toy Tracker: Part 3

The journey continues, with three new destinations. Postkat has been busy!

First stop, Calais, just across the channel from the UK, my Meerkat toy must be close now.

Calais, we were oh so close Postkat!!!

Evidently not, you see Postkat has taken  a wrong turn, and ended up in Prague. I have never been to Prague, but I want to visit some time, and so Postkat’s postcard is very helpful. No toy though. Perhaps his next stop will bring us closer together again!

Postkat clearly didn't Czech his map ;)

St. Petersburg? That is even further away! He is almost back home in Meerkovo! Surely my toy can only get closer from herein!

Quite fancy a Big Mac now...

So just 1306 miles to go! Slightly more than last time, but at least it is less than when we first started… Where will Postkat end up next?

The journey so far

In keeping with the site maps (it is only fair, I posted the Leeds Festival Site Map 2011 the other week), here is the Reading Festival site map for this year. The image below can be clicked for a larger version, or you can head over to this shiny pdf here.

With only a week to go, the Reading Festival Site Map surfaces

Meerkat Toy Tracker: The Journey

My Meerkat toy edges closer to the United Kingdom. Now under 1000 miles to go! Postkat has now reached Venice, after a quick stop off in Munich! (Do you think he knows hes going the wrong way ever so slightly?)

A quick stop off in Munich for a game of fussball?

Munich was the third stop on the journey (2nd stop actually, if you don’t count the home village as a stop), and Venice is the 4th. Hopefully he will continue to edge closer and not end up crossing the globe before he gets here!

Ah Venice, we're getting there slowly

Of course, he now has to conquer the Alps!

Meerkat Toy Tracker

I recently compared the market for cheap home insurance. Thanks to good meerkats at comparethemarket.com I am getting a toy for thanking me for purchasing through their site. (Apparently I am being rewarded for telling the difference between a meerkat and insurance).

The journey has begun!

My toy is on it’s way, and is travelling from Merkovo, no less. It’s going to be hand delivered by Postkat.

My toy has now reached Istanbul, only 1906 miles left until it gets here!

It's getting so close now!

Sonic The Hedgehog Shoes

That's right, you are looking at a pair of shoes featuring Sonic and Tails

Over at SceeneShoes’s Etsy store, you can get yourself a pair of Sonic and Tales shoes. The price? £34.40. Also available, Mario and Luigi shoes, Pokébra’s (The cups are pokéballs), and Angry Birds bras.

I have had a look round on Etsy before, there are quite a few good little companies or individuals selling their wares, most of the time at a reasonable price. Sometimes you find some quite interesting things, like the items above!

The World’s Largest Stop Motion Animation Film

A viral add for the Nokia N8, none the less. Shot from a crane on the beach, the embedded youtube video below shows off the 12 megapixel camera the phone packs into its small shell.

From the video description:

‘Gulp’ is a short film created by Sumo Science at Aardman, depicting a fisherman going about his daily catch. Shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales, every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the ‘largest stop-motion animation set’, with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

Premiership Prices 2011

The BBC recently ran an article about the cost of a day out at all of the football grounds for the 2011/2012 season. Below is the table showing the average costs for each of the 20 Barclay’s Premiership sides this forthcoming season.

Do Fulham and Spurs overcharge for their programmes?

So there you go, if you want the cheapest day out, jump in the car and drive up to Blackburn for a home game! If, on the other hand, you feel like being ripped off, the Liverpool is the place to go! I think it is quite shocking that you can have a day out at Manchester United for less than Swansea, and QPR, who have just been promoted to the big league. Both clubs have some of the most pricey days out in the league!

Leeds Festival Food/Drink Pricelist 2011

Hot dog

A representation of a typical hot dog

Planning your budget for Leeds Festival this year? Here is a link to the pdf containing the full price list for the food/drink outlets at the festival grounds this year. The pdf can be found on the official Leeds Festival website, but it can be a bit of a pain to find!

I don’t seem to be able to find any drinks on the list, and certainly no alcoholic ones. But we can assume they will be reasonably priced, right? :-)

Some of the highlights?

  • 1 Spring roll for £2 or 6 for £3.50.
  • £7 for a gourmet burger.
  • Ostrich burger £8.
  • Nachos £6
  • Jumbo Hotdog £3.50
  • 6 Donuts, £4.00. Add 50p extra for dip.
  • Grated Cheese, only £1.00.
  • Bratwurst, £3.00.
